THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PUBLISHING GRAPHICS AND ADVERTISING GRAPHICS

FIRST OF ALL, WHO IS A GRAPHIC DESIGNER?

A graphic designer is a professional that combines images, colours and texts in perfect balance using dedicated software. Several specialisations exist in this field, some of which are creative and artistic, others schematic and rigorous.

In general, graphics rules apply to the different sectors, with a few differences whether they are meant for printing or for web use. Now, which is the difference between publishing graphics and advertising graphics?

LET’S EXPLAIN!

PUBLISHING GRAPHICS

They are part of the publishing world and regard the production of books (not only textbooks), magazines, catalogues, manuals, etc. Their process is slightly stricter and schematic than in advertising graphics.

To better explain what a publishing graphics designer does, let’s take the example of a textbook in the pre-press phase.

First of all, a graphic project is made to fix dimensions, margins, and columns where to arrange the text, fonts to be used, colours (different colours for different data sheets, for example), title and subtitle size, caption size and font, and so on until all details of the book elements are defined.

Upon completion of  the project, in cooperation with the text editor, we organise the text relative to artwork and supplementary elements, always following the initial project as accurately as possible. It’s like a picture puzzle!

ADVERTISING GRAPHICS

These are about producing advertising material for the communication of a brand, a product or a service. It is a very creative job requiring a lively imagination  together with drawing and design skills. Different media and formats are used and differently processed based on whether for paper or digital printing.

An advertising graphics designer produces leaflets, gadgets, billboards and posters, logos and all visuals connected with a company, an event or a brand.

Even though we usually connect publishing products with paper printing, in recent years the world of publishing has significantly expanded to include the digital format. For this reason, graphic artists should always keep up to date and never stop integrating their graphic skills with digital knowledge.

IN SUMMARY
  • Advertising graphics are meant to visually identify a brand and communicate its values; they are very creative and more free as to composition.
  • Publishing graphics regard the world of complex publications, are more rigorous and systematic and demand to strictly comply with a defined project.
